In honor of Election Day

100% of the American nomadic families and indefinite travellers I follow online who have openly professed their political beliefs are libertarians. I’ll have to go into why I think that is another time. In any event, to a libertarian, the difference between a Democrat and a Republican is very small. It’s somewhat amusing to watch each side demonize the other when they’re practically, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the same party.

Obama won, so let’s look on the bright side. His foreign policy (if not the economy…) has been one of his stronger points. He’s much more popular globally.

In Picton, New Zealand’s public library there was an entire display devoted to “US Election 2012”…but with not a single mention of Mitt Romney.

Take a look at these quotes and think about how close we might have come to some pretty crazy—crazy dangerous—foreign policies (mostly on a fear-mongering anti-Islam bent):

Mitt Romney:

“Now we’re going to — you said the person’s going to be in Guantanamo. I’m glad they’re at Guantanamo. I don’t want them on our soil. I want them on Guantanamo, where they don’t get the access to lawyers they get when they’re on our soil. I don’t want them in our prisons. I want them there. Some people have said, we ought to close Guantanamo. My view is, we ought to double Guantanamo.”

“Conservatives believe in providing Constitutional rights to our citizens, not to enemy combatants like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.”

"You sit down with your attorneys and tell you what you have to do, but obviously the president of the United States has to do what’s in the best interest of the United States against a potential threat." –on whether he would consult Congress about invading Iran.

“I am fully committed to strengthening America through our values, through a growing economy, and through a military that’s second to none, I will not cut the military budget. I will instead expand our essential weapons programs and our (number of) active-duty personnel. I do these things not so that we have to fight wars, but so that we can prevent wars.”

”How about people who are in settings — mosques, for instance — that may be teaching doctrines of hate and terror. Are we monitoring that? Are we wiretapping? Are we following what’s going on?"

Newt Gingrich:

Last year, when asked what he would do as president if Israel informed him of an imminent military strike against Iran, Gingrich said his reply would be “How can we help you?”

“The Palestinians are an invented people.”

"I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they’re my age, they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists."

"Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust Museum in Washington. There is no reason for us to accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center."

Rick Santorum:

“I think the Democrats are actually worried he (Obama) may go to Indonesia and bow to more Muslims.”

“There are no Palestinians. All the people who live in the West Bank are Israelis. There are no Palestinians. This is Israeli land.”

“I would be saying to the Iranians, you either open those facilities, begin to dismantle them and make them available to inspectors or we will degrade those facilities though air strikes. And make it very public that we are doing that. Iran would not get a nuclear weapon under my watch.”
